The Story Behind Tifa's Creation

Hi everyone!

It’s Baku again, and no, this isn’t a devlog.

We like telling you as much as possible about our world and characters, so I decided we should write about the history of the creation of each female lead (and male lead, if that would interesting)

WARNING!!! If you haven’t played the game for a long time, some of this information might spoil some things! WARNING!!!

So, first up is Tifa.

As I said a very long time ago, Tifa existed as a character concept before I even joined on as one of the game’s main developers and artists. I kept her name the same as a nod to the past, but her character has changed a lot since then.

What did I want to see in Tifa? An easygoing, cheerful, clumsy, and... frankly, airheaded girl. Of course, there’s more to her than that, and everything we’ve seen from her up to this point has only reflected one side of her. You could say that all her cheerfulness is a consequence of what she’s been through in the past. But that doesn’t mean her past was completely terrible. Tifa is simply a genius at her craft (fighting), and the reason she acts the way she does and loves Ilias so much flows from that fact. After serving so long in the army and then having Ilias take over all her domestic chores, Tifa doesn’t have the faintest idea of how to run a household and doesn’t understand basic social interactions. You could say that Ilias has spoiled her a lot, but she always tries to do her part. As best she can. She really does.

To hint at her easygoing personality, I used an easygoing and breezy color scheme: pink, light blue, and white. Tifa’s hair is a bit tousled and she never laces her shirt up all the way because she gets easily distracted and doesn’t care too much about being neat. The only thing she really cares about is Ilias’s well-being and safety. That’s why she wears a huge pack and a bunch of belt pouches — to make sure she always has everything she needs to take care of him.

Tifa’s pack is so huge for a few reasons. Firstly, I wanted to show how easy it is for her to carry such a heavy burden every day despite her fairly ordinary-looking physique. Secondly, she always wants to carry something for every possible occasion because she understands her shortcomings and doesn’t want to be a burden on Ilias. Thirdly, we originally planned to make Tifa an inventory helper who unlocks near-infinite slots for the player to store things in when she’s around, and then strictly limit inventory slots when she’s not around. However, during the development process, I realized the inventory idea could make for an annoying gameplay mechanic, so I changed it to a bonus feature.

Another one of Tifa’s quirks is that she loves bizarre and gross things. If she considers a certain thing cute, chances are that nobody else does. I think this fits her character very well. She doesn’t wear underclothes and generally prefers to be naked because clothes restrict her movements. Oh, and she loves food. REALLY loves it. Which is pretty important for a game about cooking 😀😀

To Ilias, Tifa is a family member and an extremely important person in his life. She saved his life and raised him as best she could, and he is very grateful to her. At the beginning of the game, neither Ilias nor Tifa really think of each other as being members of the opposite sex and there’s no romantic attraction between them. This is why building a relationship is so complicated for them; loving each other in a new way requires a dual effort, though Tifa is a little ahead of Ilias on this.

Can't help but love her at the end of the day, she just has that golden retriever puppy sort of feel to her, clumsy but sweet and adorable in spite of (or sometimes because of) her instinctive grasp for combat. So far as love interests go, it's constantly switching between her and Wrenna for me, both have their ups and downs to their relationship with Illias. Would love to get further insights like this for all the main cast, always nice to get further context direct from the source.
